Formerly Hot Rod Jim's, Nerd Rods combines old classics with all the advances new cars have without compromising that classic feel you get from that old Muscle Car you have adored since you were 16(or dreamed about since you were sixteen, like me).

Darkness II Challenge

Apparently, deviant art has decided most people aren't old enough to view the gore in this sequential. But I think its good for you. Ya know? It builds character.

And now, a new version, that is hopefully better than the original. The simply story behind this sequential is that after a god 20 hours of work into it, Adobe Flash Professional(the shittiest software on earth, go fuck yourself Adobe) decided that my work was worth destroying. I had a myriad of random lines added, and a ton of lines and shapes removed. My work was destroyed and I had a little over 6 hours to the deadline. So I started over and did the best I could with what wasn't destroyed. So now I have added a few things I had planned to from the beginning and fixed a few others. There is a line of obscenities hanging over Lake Austin that may simply never dissipate. It's worthy of its own dirty book, written by me. However, I am fairly happy with what came out, regardless of the insanity.

This is older, but was really fun and quite a style departure from my heavy handed style. The Transformer is based on the beautiful artwork of Frank McIlhaney. The truck's front and back view are his artwork, while the Transformer is mine. It was part of an animation collaboration class. Someday, I will finish the animation, even if I have to do it all myself.

So, I've been neglectful of my blog lately. Mainly because I have been firmly entrenched in the world of animation and therefore have very little to show that isn't a video. Soooo... I figure I will have to start at least posting up concept art etc, for the website I work for, Spill.com. This is a banner picture I did to head a podcast by one of the site's head movie-reviewers, Cyrus. It's done in the Spill.com house style, so if it looks like a departure from my normal style... That's because it is, lol.

It got a lot of praise, considering how tiny it was on the site(I'm guessing that's why they liked it. lol). So now, here it is, in giganto-vision!

And while I did parts of the animations in the review, this was mine. It would have been animated for the review, but you suckers just get the art. lol The premise is that Toby Maguire was originally slated to play James Franco's character and what would have happened according to the spill crew had he gotten the role.

...These are all simply me tooling around with different styles. The Alan Scott GL picture however, was for ComicBreak after I lampooned the new costume saying it was 1 step away from Liefeld's garbage. So I of course had to draw the lampoon. I couldn't simply talk about it. ...I was told the gun needed to be bigger and he needed more pouches. The other critique was that the anatomy was too good for a Liefeld picture. Sorry to disappoint, I don't know how to get that bad. lol The last two were to assuage my Street Fighter kick. Enjoy!

I just recently got a job with Spill.com as an animator and character artist and as such I haven't had a big chance to do a lot of traditional artwork. Hey howdy howdy ya'll! I had been tooling around with the notion of inking my work digitally to save on time and white out/white paint. The other day I began tooling around with a rather intense pic I did a while back of Lion-O throwing down with his team turned ZOMBIES! I know. How passe. Regardless, here is how it came out. Its far from perfect, but this is definitely the route I will be going for my comics since I have to squeeze them out as fast as possible(thank you day job and school). I see a lot of potential in this technique, especially considering how I tend to do my pencils, so its all ahead full and hope for the best!

New Logo Design

I did two revisions of my first logo for Discount Electronics, in Austin, Texas, since my first one was simply a sketch that they took. I offered to refine it at the time but they weren't interested(took it as is). Now, I have to look at it so often that it is killing me, so here are the revisions. The first is your classic, "Circular Logo" and the second is simply the same with a squared boarder. I know, I know. Its usually a no-no to go with a square logo but in this case, it seemed to work really well. This is less of a logo and more of a pic used as an upper third for ads. This beats the hell out of the original. Now let's just see if they will replace my old one with one of these...

Paper Sack Serial Killer's Best Bud...

This is a companion character for the story I will be doing involving the "Paper Sack Serial Killer" from an earlier pic I posted here. One arm is indeed bigger than the other, your eyes do not deceive you and while I did that on purpose it is going to be a royal pain in the petunia to draw them different sizes consistently. Contrary to popular belief, its easier to draw symmetric art work.

I modeled this dude for fun after a note my wife left me. I tend to call her "Bear" and in the morning, when she is groggy, "Evil Bear". In any case, she left me a note telling me to have a nice day with a stick figure bear with vampire teeth, so I turned it into the mask of a serial killer. YAY!

You don't get to know more than that until the first few pages come out. Then you will get a gist of the story and still won't get to see the two serial killers. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Besides a few shortcomings on the perspective, I don't really mind it too much(I'm still learning and always will be). I'm just happy to have my scanner up and going so I can continue to post the garbage that is rattling around in my head. Woo Hoo!!!

I did this for the sketch challenge over at Ten Ton Studios. I have never played either game but one of the trailers rocked my socks off so much so that I made the challenge a Bioshock challenge. It was supposed to be a sequentials challenge but a bunch of the competitors couldn't be bothered to do it. Really? I thought we were all supposed to be aspiring comic artists. Turns out, if you draw comics, pinups are the last thing you get to do. Oh well, I won with this so back to pin ups with the upcoming "John Carter, Warlord of Mars" challenge I chose.

At the very least, the Bioshock page will looks good in my portfolio to show editors.

This was an awesome experiment. In one of the best thought out challenges (IMO) in Ten Ton Studio's Sketch Challenge History(quickly becoming a constant practice ground for my artwork), a contestant chose to emulate a classic comic book cover and put an artist's spin on it. This meant a lot to me because it forced me to wrk within somebody else's game plan. To try to find weak spots to fix and strengths to add to my own artwork. In the end, I had a lot of fun and felt my artwork grow. The respective covers are beauties drawn by Travis Charest(Battle Chasers #1 Variant), Tim Bradstreet(Punisher #?) and David Williams(Marvel Adv. Fantastic Four #16).

I did my best to bring to the table what I thought would be cool and interesting regardless of the story(the reason they did what they did).

I haven't been able to pick up a comic book in quite a while but I am pretty sure they haven't killed off Norman Osborn, taken his power away or let the Punisher kick his shit in. In retaliation for what I think is an affront to comics (and the reason I would mow awns to read them and find out how Normie meets his untimely and satisfying demise) I had to entertain myself instead by drawing what I wish would happen or how I would have it happen in the comic books if Brian and Mark thought it was cool. Ares is a character that I am not sure marvel has figured out what to do with yet. His mini was incredibly awesome but so far he has been turned into the angry version of Wonderman for the Dark Avengers comic. With fluctuating power levels and bad-ass to not so bad-ass stories and actions, I wish they would get a writer in there who would focus on the characters as much as they do the overall story plan. Anyhoo, I dig him so here he is in all his sketch-i-fied glory.

And then, of course, I also have Franky. This was done a month ago but you get to see it now. I have been mulling over a Frankenstein story for a while now and when I had the chance to draw Frankenstein for TTS's sketch challenge, I decided to do my story's version. More on the story later... Just know that it involves the fifties, Austria, Einstein and Heidi. Oh yeah!

Here it comes! Red Hulk versus Holocaust! My favorite villain in comics today versus my favorite villain from when I was, like, 9. I have no idea why these two would ever fight, and yes Holocaust would get his big orange behind handed to him but, darn it, I wanted to draw it.

Howdy folks. With school back, project deadlines breathing down my back and a less than forgiving job, I can't seem to climb out from under what I would assume is an insurmountable pile of paper with a fat midget dancing on top of it. My only tools of escape so far have been a pencil, an eraser and my wife so here is some of what I've created with the first two while gasping for air under what I can only assume is my life(and so far my wife and I haven't created anything... Its a good thing).

I was tooling around online one evening between projects when I saw an Art Challenge on Tentonstudios.com and decided that while I didn't have time to join said contest, I still wanted to try my hand at this lame-ass character. I wasn't a very big fan of the pencilled pic but it does a great job of showing my thought process. The pencilled version had a lot of issues which end up being fixed or enhanced in the inking process. This is how I approach all of my pictures. The pencils are always very rough(or wrong for that matter) and instead of waiting and then coming back and reworking my art again in the pencils' stage I simply address them when I ink my art.

It's been a while and I haven't really had the chance to post anything new(or old for that matter). But now with my new apt. moved into, my wedding out of the way and my computers back online, its time to kick it into gear! So first up are a bunch of character designs I did in order to clep out of an art class that I really don't think I should have to take. And while the body of work should speak for itself, I have to make sure the Dept. Head knows I am dedicated to seeing my degree through if he's going to give me a pass on this. This story line has such a promising cast of characters and possibilities. I just hope they don't rush it and take all the flavor out of it like they did with Secret Invasion. There just wasn't enough time to marinate on the characters and concepts. Oh well, better luck next time Marvel.

As for the picture, this is just a few of my favs from this awesome series(I started this pic after the one shot and have proceeded to take as long as possible on it apparently). Its still a WIP so I'll post the finished version when it comes. Thanks for checkin' in ya'll.

I did these three in about 30 minutes the other night. I used to use that oval shit they teach in the "How to Draw Comics" books but those don't really ever help you flesh out characters so now I flesh them out using a technique I was introduced to by my "Drawing for Animation" Professor and it has really helped me. These are 'over rendered'(compared to my natural style) pictures but I like how they turned out. So enjoy these ugly suckers!!!
